For my design process I decided to use the inspiration from the cougar logo made in the adobe illustrator
tutorials, but add my own twist to it. Since my digital project was based on the concept of Washington State Volleyball, I continued the representation in my logo. I made a circle around the logo because volleyball’s are round, so it made sense to have it surrounding the logo. In the middle I have a volleyball player who is blocking a ball and the Washington State University logo in the center of the figure of the volleyball player. The reason I chose a blocking position for the logo is because blocking is a big part of the volleyball program. Said previously in my digital project, we are ranked number three in the country for blocking, so that is why the symbol must be of blocking. The lines spread apart on the outer part of the circle was done to bring emphasis and make the logo pop out. Gave the logo the sort of jazz hands excitement to the graphic on this logo post.
To create the logo I first pulled two photos I used in my graphic design project. I first resized the images after I wen tup to file and placed the photos into the document, as well as created a new layer. The cougar head and the blocking photo I used the pen tool to cut out the parts I wanted to use in my logo. I went around each shape and traced along the edges to create the look I wanted. Next I took of the stroke of each and changed to a fill color and took the eye off of the first layer, so I could only see the images I cropped. Next I took the shape builder tool and clicked on alt/option to delete excess parts I didn’t want in my design. Next I took the two shapes and grouped them together to make them move as one. After that, I took the ellipse tool and made a circle around the whole design and made it have no stroke, then sent that to the back. Next I created a new circle and cropped it around the circle I just made and used the shift and alt tools to make it line up perfectly with the previous circle. Next I copied the outer most circle and pasted it in place. I used the shift and alt tool to make the circle come out a little bigger from the previous circle. Repeated that step twice then took the text tool and made a text on the path. I chose what font I wanted and made it all caps. I used the arrow tools to move my text along the path to make it appear on top. I took the next biggest circle and held shift down to make it align in the middle of my text. I made the stroke of the line increase to 32 points so that it covered my text. Next I went to stroke and showed all the options and made it dashed lined to create the rays effect. Made the points 8 and 7 to make the lines look just big enough. I took the scissors tool and cut the top half of the circle so that the letters were no longer covered. Then I took the outer most circle and increased the stroke to bring it in tight around the logo.
To make the logo become one and have it stay the same shape even if you shrink it down, I clicked on the bottom circle to click expand and then eventually the whole thing I selected and clicked expand again for the whole logo. Then I went to pathfinder and clicked unite for the whole logo. For changing the color I went to the gradient palette and changed them to red and an orange red and made the gradient trace from the bottom to the top to give it a shimmer. Lastly, I went to object, art board, and clicked fit to selected art.
This logo has a very bold and definite design to it. It’s very striking and you immediately know what this logo is representing. That being said, some of the more minor design details could use a bit more work.
The cougar head logo feels a bit out of place on the player’s silhouette. The placement makes the player and cougar feel squished and unnatural. The silhouette of the player is very effective though and I feel that it would look much better with the cougar either gone or placed somewhere else. This is just an idea, but you could scale down the player and place her more in the bottom left area, make a circle for a volleyball, make it look like she’s blocking it, and put the cougar head on the volleyball.
The other issue that I can see is that the font for the text “Volleyball” doesn’t really match the rest of the logo. You have a sleek, clean circle with the sharp lined border and a cut-out style silhouette. The font you currently have isn’t nearly as bold as the rest of your logo. Instead of using something that looks thin, fragile, and papery, go for a font that invokes the strength of the volleyball team. That would bring the whole logo design together in a much more cohesive way.
I really like the direction you are taking this logo and I think the general concept in memorable and eye catching. With some more streamlining it’ll turn out even better!

Hi Ella! You thought this design out very well, and I think that it’s a really great logo! However, I do have some suggestions that might make your logo look even greater. I would suggest making the cut out of the girl slightly larger, so that she fills in the bottom of the circle she is in, this will make the logo look a little fuller, and it will also make the WSU logo appear much better. I also would suggest maybe working on her fingers a little bit as they look kind of weird. With that being said I feel it will pull your logo together and make it turn out looking very good. I can really picture it being like, a patch on a jacket or something. It looks very good so good job. It directly relates to your topic and it makes a perfect logo for it as well.

Ella,
I really like your project focus of WSU Volleyball, I enjoy seeing sport related projects such as mine. I think its cool how you tied in one of our tutorials and put your own twist on it! They color and the font of “Volleyball” looks nice with this particular design. My favorite part of this logo draft is your use of a volleyball player outline by using white space. I think it’s a very unique look. My first suggestion for your final draft is to maybe use another color or have the color fade into a silver/grey. This would make it stand out more and make it more appealing than it already is. A second critique would be to maybe get rid of the WSU logo because it’s already its own logo and I think it would look fine without it. You could always add “Washington State” text if you would like.
I think you are off to a great start!

Hey Ella, first off I would like to say its super cool that you play volleyball on the Washington state team. I bet your super good and I definitely got to catch a game sometime. Anyways, loved the beginning start to your final logo and I think it has a lot of potential to be a great logo design. I love that you took additional resources from the tutorials and put your own spin and it to make it unique and stylish for your specific logo. The cropped photo of you jumping with your hands up adds a great artistic flavor to your logo design and I really see a great outlet for your logo being one of the best. Some areas of critic or suggestion, I would say to use the technique from the banner designs to add to the “volleyball” text/font. Also I would add maybe a frame or border between your logo to give it more style because I think the logos great, but it can be better if you add more artistic things to it to make viewers tune in more to your logo as it depicts your theme for your topic. Overall, great job and I don’t think you need a lot more, but it can always help as it’s been exemplified through previous logo designs in the course.
Nkumbu Chisebuka: While looking at different comments for my logo design, I saw that a few comments reiterated good things about my logo such as the camera and logo display within the camera lens. I also saw that people really enjoyed my design by alluding specific details from my topic area of my logo inside the camera to make it look more professional. Some critic’s that I got from fellow classmates was extra artistic styles that don’t add to my full logo design, or a border around my logo to signify my full creation. I like these comments because I think its very helpful to get a full opinion on what I need to create/ do in order to present the best logo possible. I plan on maybe taking or revising my banner and text underneath my logo so it doesn’t take away as much from the design that I created. I also want to sharpen any necessary elements in my logo so it looks clean and highly professional for my final logo. I think I have a great start but could do a little more in order to make this final logo design the most presentable and applying to all viewers around.
